Wrestler Profiles: Chuck Palumbo – Part 1

I have been a personal fan of ‘The Main Event’ Chuck Palumbo ever since I first saw him emerge in World Championship wrestling as a simple jobber making other Wrestlers look good. He was then however re-packaged and sent back to the WCW Powerplant where he trained long and hard to get where he would get to. After finishing his training, Chuck was put back on the main roster in the year 2000 as a member of ‘The Natural Born Thrillers’, a faction of young, up and coming and newly professional talents which included the likes of Shawn Staziak, Mark Jindrak, Sean O’Haire, Reno and last but certainly not least, Chuck Palumbo himself.

The Natural Born Thrillers were labeled as an evolution’ and new school’ based Faction, all up and comers, fresh new graduates from the legendary WCW training grounds famous for training the likes of former WCW World Heavyweight Champion Bill Goldberg, the man who produced an undefeated streak of 173 wins and 0 losses.

All members of the Natural Born Thrillers had what it took to become the next big thing in professional wrestling, and without a doubt, they were the future of our sport. Sean O’Haire was the high flying psycho, Jindrak was the all rounder, Staziak was pure muscle and power, Reno was a hardcore brawler with a very unique look, and Chuck simply had it all. The looks, the talent and the charisma. As we all know, a Superstar Look is what is needed to get far in this business, you need literally ‘The Total Package’ to succeed, and this is exactly what Chuck had, as was recognized by WCW management who promptly put him in a feud with THE Total Package, Lex Luger in a valiant effort to main event Chuck Palumbo, even going as far as giving him the nickname ‘The Main Event.’ Chuck was certainly riding high, but the time was not right to put the world heavyweight championship on Chuck Palumbo, and he sank back down to the midcard status in WCW along with the rest of the thrillers, but still putting on main event quality matches with each and every performance that he came on the winning end of.

Chuck Palumbo went on to work with the World Wrestling Federation upon the purchase of WCW, but he never got far in the entire Alliance angle. He was instead sent once again to development to hone his skills and re-emerged as the tag team partner of Billy Gunn as a ‘gay’ tag-team called Billy and Chuck. They even went as far as to have a public ‘wedding’ on television. The controversial angle provoked WWE to remove the angle altogether, and Billy & Chuck were no more. He would later emerge as a member of the Full Blooded Italians, but again, this would not last long and Chuck would leave World Wrestling Entertainment shortly after.

Since then, Chuck Palumbo made his return to WWE in the summer of 2007, once again sporting his long hair much like he did in WCW, this time riding a motorcycle and becoming a biker on television. Chuck still has what it takes, he just needs a break, and if the WWE are smart, they will attempt to push him as best as they can to see how it will take off. He is literally a total package in professional wrestling, and closing in on his prime years, he could very well have a main event role lined up!

Why the World Wrestling Federation Had to Change Its Name to World Wrestling Entertainment

4708291160 ccccaab186 m Why the World Wrestling Federation had to change its name to World Wrestling Entertainment

Today the general public knows World Wrestling Entertainment as the WWE though some people on occasion call it the WWF because the memories of the past. It is no longer that anymore and hasn’t been for going to be seven years coming up. To understand it, maybe it would be best to look back into the past to see what happened eventually leading to the change that is known today.

Before the name change to WWE and even before WWF, it was once called the WWWF standing for World Wide Wrestling Federation. It was run by Vince McMahon Sr. in having a regional territory and would later sell it to his son Vince McMahon. He changed it to WWF standing for World Wrestling Federation. At the time, it was expanding and attempting to become a national promotion.

The mission had been accomplished and for many years had been the established name. Every single person around the world knew it as that it was known by it. The media of course took every opportunity to blast it as it is part of the pure hatred for some oddball reason.

There were lawsuits thrown in by the World Wildlife Fund and a trademark challenge came up over the usage of the initials WWF. It wasn’t the name World Wrestling Federation that came into question but more so the idea of the initials internationally. There was some agreement between the two companies about not marketing it internationally as WWF but Vince didn’t think much of it or got a little cocky thinking he could what he wanted.

Eight years later, the change happened and it took some time to get used to it. In 2002, the company was renamed to WWE after a court ordered the official change. The campaign was made with having the “Get The “F” Out” slogan mocking the World Wildlife Fund in the process. Why this happened was because of Vince McMahon himself and probably should have been more careful. There is a lesson that you have to learn not to get too cocky or else something will happen.

Now, the name is stuck and probably will not change because Vince McMahon will not seek an appeal.

Plus, with the name being established all ready, it would be rather pointless to go ahead and try to go back in time. It will be said on occasion WWF but that is just because of learning that and not really adapting to the new name. In the end, it really came down to a legal decision by the courts to force the name change. Had that not happened, it would have still been called the WWF or World Wrestling Federation.

Wrestler Profiles: Dean Malenko

4707757121 e7828b692e m Wrestler profiles: Dean Malenko

Dean Malenko is widely regarded as one of the most technically sound professional wrestlers ever to set foot in the squared circle. Dean Malenko was born under the name of Dean Simon and lived his life in the wrestling business from day one. His father was legendary professional wrestler Boris Malenko; one of the most famous wrestlers before wrestling went mainstream and was widely televised. Dean also has a brother, Joe Malenko, who at one point was also a professional wrestler but is now retired.

Dean Malenko began his professional wrestling career in the late 70′s and achieved mediocre fame along with his brother Joe whom together were The Malenko Brother’s tag team. After many years of wrestling together, Dean and Joe went their separate ways, with Joe becoming semi-retired and concentrating more on his family and his sub-career as a pharmacist, and Dean moving on to wrestle on television for what was considered the third biggest and without a doubt, the best solid wrestling action at the time, with Extreme Championship Wrestling, the cult-like organization led by the brains of Paul E. Dangerously, also known as Paul Heyman.

Dean had a successful run in ECW, capturing the ECW Tag Team titles with the man who would quickly become his best friend in the wrestling business, Chris Benoit. He also had a very successful feud with his other best friend Eddie Guerrero in a feud which would become a cult classic for ECW fans providing some of the most technically sound wrestling that the United States has ever seen, rivaling the likes of World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation.

Dean’s talent, his history, background and his new found friendships and respect earned him, along with Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn and more, a spot on the roster of World Championship Wrestling, widely regarded at the time to be the company with all the capabilities to end the world renown regime of the WWF as the king promotion of Wrestling, and they were not far from the truth at one point.

Malenko went on to have a some-what successful tenure in the WCW, being dubbed both The Iceman’ for his cold and ruthless demeanor, and The Man of 1,000 Holds’ the title once held by the legendary Dynamite Kid Tommy Billington, a name dubbed unto him for his amazing range of technical moves and mat work, combined with his ultimate submission maneuvers that nobody since has been able to match. Along his way he captures the Cruiserweight title on several occasions and had memorable matches with the likes of Rey Misterio Jr, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero Jr, along with many, many more. You could guarantee, that when Malenko got in the ring, you were going to get your moneys worth when it came to pure wrestling.

After WCW, Malenko went on to the WWF capturing the Light Heavyweight title there as well as forming a successful faction known as The Radicalz’ with his friends Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn. This name sat well as they had one last match in the WCW before jumping straight away to the ship of the WWF, stating later on in the years that they escaped the titanic and jumped into the lifeboat.

Malenko retired from active competition in 2001 but has since taken on the role as a Road Agent backstage in the World Wrestling entertainment and still maintains the respect he had gained over the years and years he had been active in our fair sport. As shocking as it was to see a man in his prime as much as Malenko call it quits, you can not help but wonder, would Malenko be a World Champion if he had stayed in the sport? Lord knows, he certainly was the total package when it came to wrestling. He was THE very definition of talent!
